ICARUS Webinar - Accelerating SAF Development in Africa, 23 September 2026 The transition to Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) offers significant opportunities for Africa to support aviation decarbonisation, create new value chains, and contribute to sustainable economic development. However, SAF deployment across the continent remains at an early stage and faces a range of technical, policy, financial, and infrastructure challenges.
Drawing on the final ICARUS deliverable, “SAF Development in Africa”, this webinar presented key findings and recommendations from an assessment closely co-developed with experts. The session explored current opportunities, barriers to deployment, country readiness considerations, and actions that can support future SAF development across different African contexts.
All presentations and the conference recording are available at the project website.

ICARUS Webinar - Sustainability Certification for Emerging SAF Pathways, 30 September 2026Sustainability certification plays a critical role in enabling market access, regulatory compliance, investor confidence, and environmental credibility for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). As new SAF technologies progress from research and development towards commercial deployment, project developers increasingly seek clarity on certification expectations at earlier stages of project development.
This webinar presented the findings from the final ICARUS deliverable, “Guidance on SAF Certification”, developed to support researchers and early-stage project developers working on novel SAF pathways. The session highlighted key sustainability certification considerations that should be addressed early in project design and development.
All presentations and the conference recording are available at the project website.

The EU-funded project ICARUS – International Cooperation for Sustainable Aviation Biofuels – is dedicated to advancing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production by addressing critical technology limitations for three pivotal SAF production routes: biocrude from hydrothermal liquefaction to SAF, isobutanol from lignocellulosic biomass to SAF, and synthetic Fischer-Tropsch fuels from biomass gasification to SAF. These three value chains have been strategically chosen due to their proximity to market and their indispensable role in achieving European and international SAF deployment targets.
ICARUS builds on a strong international consortium of 20 reputed partners including 5 partners from three Mission Innovation Countries (MIC) Canada, India and Brazil, and two partners from USA joining R&I activities as members of the External Executive Advisory Board (EEAB).
